Children experiencing GIScience at the KinderUni Heidelberg

On Saturday, 07.02.2015, the Neuenheimer Feld of the University Heidelberg was the area of interest for new “mappers” of the KinderUni workshop at the Institute of Geography. After an introduction about OpenStreetMap, the children between the age of 9-12 years were able to go out and do some mapping themselves. Equipped with GPS devices and tablets, they carried out different tasks such as to find points of interest via coordinates, take pictures, answer questions, measure distances as well as to collect opening hours and information on wheelchair access. Afterwards, the collected data was added to OpenStreetMap and the children created their own maps with the route of their group. The kids were very motivated and everyone had a great time including the workshop team (Carolin Klonner, Evelyn Schmitz, Benjamin Herfort and Melanie Eckle).
