2nd International Workshop Point Cloud Processing

From 4-5 December 2019, the 2nd International Workshop Point Cloud Processing was co-organized by euroSDR, the German Society for Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Geoinformation (DGPF) and the Institute for Photogrammetry (ifp) at the University of Stuttgart.

The aim of the workshop was to present and discuss the processing and evaluation of point clouds focusing on mapping purposes by bringing together experts from industry, academia and national mapping agencies. Among the topics covered were semantic segmentation, deep learning on point clouds with different goals, tree modelling and self-calibration.

The full program can be found here, including abstracts and presentations.

Lukas Winiwarter, PhD student in the 3DGeo Research Group, presented his research on error budget quantification of terrestrial laser scanners and its application in geomorphic surface change quantification. The rigorous propagation of sensing errors to uncertainties in the final change values allows for statistical tests that more clearly show areas where the observed change can be reliably distinguished from sensor noise than previous approaches. Read the abstract or take a look at the presentation slides.

The GEODYNAMO4D research project develops methods for the analysis of time series of 3D topographic point cloud data, referred to as 4D point clouds. The goal therein is robust quantification of geometric change, tracing of the change direction, and the identification of areas where we cannot reliably determine change.
